You should know after reading how to control distance around the greens how this should work. In this article I am giving a real example while on the golf course. Kind of like a playing lesson. Since we are discussing controlling your distance with the sand wedge we will talk about a shot often faced on the golf course many golfers absolutely brutalize. And quite frankly its pretty embarrassing.

Here is our scenario:

You have a 50 yard shot from where the ball rests to the pin location. Since we now know how far we can fly the ball in the air after our sand wedge drill lets take a closer look at the green and where we want the our ball to land so we can get our ball up and down. After determining where we want the ball to land we determined we want to the ball to actually fly in the air 43 yards giving us about 23 feet or 7 yards of roll and release to the hole.

With this shot we don’t want something too low that is going to skip and run way past the hole so we rule out a pitching wedge for this shot. Now you are left with the decision of whether to use your 56 or your 60 degree wedge. Assuming we are in the fairway let’s determine what our lie is like. Is the fairway firm or a little soft so that our wedge can easily get under the ball. A firm fairway might lead us to the 56 with less bounce enabling us to pinch the back of the ball easier than the 60 degree.

But lets assume we can easily get the club under the ball. With that we choose a 60 degree because with a short shot of 43 yards the ball will be slightly hot when it lands so we need to give a little loft and room to skip and then check to the hole. Now with your practice earlier you are going to take your back swing to the part of the clock that will produce a shot that flies 43 yards in the air.

Whether you are just a beginner at golf or have been playing for some years, there is always something new for you to learn or some skill to hone and there is no doubt that the best way to do that is with the help of a professional coach.

However, the problem is that coaching can cost a lot of money.

At the top end of the scale you may think about enrolling at a golf school for an intensive course and immersing yourself for a full 7 days in learning or improving one specific facet of your game. Costs will vary widely depending upon the school you opt for and things like the quality of its instructors and the range of training facilities which the school provides. In every case however the cost is likely to be high and you can certainly think about paying $1,000 to $2,000 or more for a course of this nature.

Your next option may be to consider individual lessons with a local golf professional lasting perhaps 1 or 2 hours every day, or possibly just two or three times a week. This option is certainly one which is worth considering as an alternative to attending a golf school, however it will still be fairly expensive, particularly if you discover that you need to continue your lessons for any length of time.

The following Titleist golf balls will be examined: Pro V1, DT SO-LO, HP Distance MX, and the NXT. Each will be given a grade from A to F (A-B-C-D-F) with A being the highest. I will rate each ball in reference to how they scored with their driver accuracy, iron accuracy, driver distance, spin factor, and softness of feel.

The Titleist Pro V1 is the creme de la crop – coming in at a whopping $44/dozen price tag. This 3 piece ball is a common ball that is found among players on the PGA Tour – but is it just because they’re given them for free, or do they really perform that much better? I scored this ball as an “A” for: spin factor, distance with driver, softness of feel, and its driver accuracy. Besides setting you back on your retirement contributions due to its price, I also graded this ball as a “C” for its iron accuracy.

If you had your swing analyzed and found that you have a slower head speed (usually less than 100), the 2-piece Titleist DT SO-LO may be your choice. It won’t break your bank as much, at $22/dozen, and it is respectable on the course. I rated this ball as an “A” for: distance with the driver, and soft feel. I scored it as a “B” for its iron accuracy, driver accuracy, and its spin factor. As you can see, this ball was a solid value when compared to the pricey Pro V1.

If flying for miles off the tee is your cup of “tee”, then the Titleist HP Distance MX 2-piece golf ball is worth considering. At a store offered price of $19/dozen, it isn’t too expensive, but do you get even what you pay for? I graded this ball as an “A” for its distance with a driver (it better do that!). It fared a “B” rating for its driver accuracy, but that’s where things start to go down hill (or off the fairway). It rated as only a “C” for its spin factor, softness, and accuracy with an iron. So, while it will buy you a few extra yards off the tee, you may pay for
it when it gets closer to the green.

Finally, I rated the Titleist NXT 2-piece. This ball was the second most expensive at $28/dozen – so how did it compare? I rated it as an “A” for its distance with the driver. I gave it a “B” for accuracy with a driver, and soft feel. However, I wasn’t impressed with its iron accuracy and its spin factor, which I graded as a “C”.

So, if you want the absolute best performing ball without regards to price, go with the Pro V1. If you are looking for the best value – hands down is the DT SO-LO. If distance is your deal, go with the HP Distance MX – but be prepared to sacrifice the other parts of your game. And, finally, if you want to find a good ball to hit into the lake, use the NXT.

Thus, the innovative discovery led to less twisting of the club’s head when off-center hits occurred. In addition, a clubhead with less rotation also leads to greater distance, greater ball speed and the ability to make the flight path straighter.

The development and creation of Callaway FT drivers is quite complex. A carbon composite clubhead creation process begins with fine strands of black carbon fiber, woven together. Each strand is extremely thin, approximately one tenth the size of a human hair. These fibers are combined with epoxy resin and a carbon pre-preg is formed. When many of the pre-preg composites are put together into a driver body shaped tool, the process continues. Each piece is added to the tool in a different direction, allowing more strength to be created as the fibers harden. As the hardening is taking place, weights are put into the internal areas for maximum center of gravity and balance. With the sole and the crown tools being put together and heated in an oven, the materials bind together to form a tough shell.

Callaway has a well standing reputation with its Callaway Big Bertha drivers, which have been used for many years by professionals and amateurs. Callaway’s introduction of the FT driver came in 2003 with the FT-3 driver, followed by the FT-5 and FT-i in recent years. The new 2009 FT-iQ driver has been praised by golf enthusiasts, including the Golf Digest Hot List award, due to its advancements in technology, testing results and player impact on the course. Concerning the FT-iQ, Taylor Made Golf states “it’s the longest, straightest driver we’ve ever created”.

The secret behind the FT Irons is fairly simple. The metallurgists at Callaway Golf created a new metal to feature in the irons’ designs. The metal, Tunite Alloy, weighs about 20 percent more than stainless steel. In addition, it has twice the density and is made of a tungsten and nickel base. With a small amount of silicon added for softness and ferro-chromium for polishing capabilities, the metal is a perfect fit. The tunite forms are used for all Callaway FT Irons. The irons also include a injection-molded thermoplastic urethane layer. This layer sits behind the clubface, allowing for more vibration reduction and an enhanced feel.

Callaway doesn’t build golf clubs for professionals alone. They seek to create products amateur golfers can utilize to not only enjoy but also improve their game. One mission for Callaway FT clubs is the ability to take an average golfer and minimize the impact of their flaws. Cleaning a Winn Grip

Because Winn grips have absorbent properties, they may eventually soil from dirt and perspiration from your golf glove and hands. This does not affect the performance of the grip.

To clean a Winn grip, apply a small amount of water or rubbing alcohol to a soft towel, and gently rub the grips. Do not saturate the towel. Never use a brush and soapy water to clean a Winn grip because it may damage the top surface and destroy the tackiness and slip-resistance of the grip.

DO NOT immerse Winn grips in a bucket of water to clean them. This will saturate the underlying layer of the grip and may ruin the grip.
Grip Care in Wet Weather

When playing in wet weather, do your best to keep your grips dry. If your grips do get wet, use a soft, dry towel to pat them dry. Never rub a Winn grip vigorously with a towel! This will damage the top surface, thereby undermining the tackiness and slip-resistance of the grip.

Remove the old grip with a hooked blade in a utility knife taking care to always cut away from yourself. Be extremely careful when dealing with graphite shafts, as you do not want to cut into the shaft. Peel off the old tape by hand and clean up the residue with a cloth and grip solvent. Do not scrape a graphite shaft, because scraping can cut into the graphite fibers and weaken the shaft.

Now that you have removed the old grip and cleaned the shaft you are ready to install your new Winn grip.

It is important to realize that Winn grips are not made of rubber and therefore require different treatment and technique. Do not remove your grips from their individually wrapped package until you are ready to install them. After it has been removed from the packaging you should not twist or bend the grip.

While the club is in the vise, apply one layer of two-sided 2″ grip tape. Leave an extra ¼” of tape over the butt end of the shaft.

Peel the backing off the tape and cover the butt of the shaft with the overlapping portion of tape.

Squirt a generous amount of odorless mineral spirits inside the grip, sealing the vent hole in the butt of the grip with your finger. Close the small (mouth) end of the grip, and shake vigorously to wet the entire inside of the grip.

Pour the excess solvent over the entire length of the two-sided tape. Use extra solvent from the can as needed, using a metal tray to catch excess fluid.

Tilting the grip slightly, gently slide the nipple of the grip over the butt end of the shaft. Once the nipple is over the end of the shaft quickly bring the grip parallel to the floor and slide it all the way on. When you do this you want to make sure the all of the tape is still wet with solvent.

Push the grip firmly onto the shaft to make sure the grip butt cap is all the way up against the shaft butt.

Using the marks on the nipple and butt of the grip, make sure the grip is on straight and is squared to the clubface. The grip can be adjusted for a few minutes after installation while the tape is still activated. Allow ample drying time before using the club, it should usually be ready to use in about 30 minutes.

All golf courses are full of areas that are designed to swallow up golf balls like water and sand and tall grass. Many golfers look for ways to save money on golf balls especially at fifty dollars a dozen for some new golf balls. It is no wonder you hear groans from most golfers as they helplessly watch one of their golf balls fly into water or get lost in the tall grass.

The cheapest way to save money on golf balls is, although not the easiest way, is to search the golf course for lost golf balls. Of course, this is very time consuming and makes for a slow game of golf if you do this whilst playing. Golf balls that are lost on the golf course are usually collected and sold in the pro shop, often for as little as fifty cents a piece. Large retailers and sporting goods stores also sell used golf balls which have been found, cleaned and re-packaged. These are usually moderately priced. Of course, one disadvantage of buying pre-owned golf balls from the pro shop or retail store is that different makes or models of golf balls may be mixed in the packs and different brands have different playing characteristics.

There are many brands of new golf balls on the market that represent very good value for money and can cost as little as ten dollars a dozen. These less expensive golf balls are likely to work just as well for you as their more expensive partners.

Golf balls that have more spin and are softer tend to be the more expensive models. The golf ball industry produces new makes and models every year. So look out for the ‘end-of-season’ clearance sales. Most newly manufactured golf balls will not differ greatly in their performance than their predecessors, it is usually the style that changes. So ‘last seasons’ golf balls will be sold at huge discounts. It may be possible to purchase golf balls that were originally say thirty dollars a dozen for as little as ten dollars.

The Scotty Cameron line of putters from Titleist is a very extensive line. The Scotty Cameron company merged with Titleist about 10 years ago and since then all the putters marketed by Titleist are designed by Cameron. All the brand names associated with Scotty Cameron putters are owned by Titleist. Cameron’s designs are esthetically pleasing, and some of his putters almost look like works of art or sculpture.

The Detour line of putters are rather remarkable looking instruments. The putter heads consist of a blade type putter face and an attached back body plate, perpendicular to the face, which has a long aiming line. Both the back body plate and the aiming line are curved. Cameron is convinced that an arced stroke is the proper stoke for putting rather than a stroke that attempts to be straight along the target line from back to finish. The arc of the putter would move inside the target line in the back stroke, the putter would come square to the target line at ball impact, and the arc would continue inside the target line after the ball is struck. This is sometimes referred to as an inside-neutral-inside putting stroke. Not all the experts agree that an arced stroke is the proper one for putting. The renowned short game guru, Dave Pelz, states in his book “Putt Like the Pros” that most golfers would be better off with a stroke that remains along the target line throughout, although he acknowledges that many golfers, including top pros, use the arced stroke method, often with considerable success. Belly putters have become popular in recent years, and it is obvious that one is forced to use an arced stoke with such a putter.

There are a total of 4 putters that have the Detour technology. They include the Detour and Detour 2, and the difference in these two clubs is that the Detour has a one shaft offset, whereas the shaft of the Detour 2 is straight. The Detour technology has also been incorporated into one of the older and popular lines of Cameron putters called the Newport line. The Newport 2 and the Newport 2.5 Detour putters both sport the curved flange and its associated weight distribution system described above. All four Detour putters have a loft of 4 degrees and a standard lie angle of 71 degrees. The Detour 2 and the Newport 2.5 Detour are not available for left handers. There are some options for length and club head weight on most of the models.

The Detour putters by Scotty Cameron are remarkably creative innovations. Great attention is paid to esthetics and how the putter sits and looks to the golfer’s eye. IN addition the mix of materials used t produce the clubs take into account not only weight distribution and such technical issues as MOI and CG, but great effort is also placed into optimizing the feel and sound the putter makes at ball impact. It will be interesting to see how popular these ideas become in the future, especially the long curved aiming line. All four of the Detour putters have a retail price of $300, so they are expensive, premium clubs.
